Vortrag mit Diskussion: Conflicts and conflict resolution in Nigeria

Vortrag und Diskussion mit DI Jesse Ojobor/Nigeria (in englischer Sprache)

Nigeria’s population is estimated to be over 150 million people from over 250 ethnic groups speaking over 400 languages and dialects. The country is made up of upper and lower social classes rooted in culture/tribe, religion and regional politics. Nigeria is endowed with immense natural resources like crude oil, iron ore, coal, timber etc. Oil provides 95% of its foreign exchange earnings and about 80% of budgetary revenues.

According to the conflict theory, conflicts arise when individuals and tribal groups struggle to maximizes their benefits based on desires/greed, religious or ethnic ideologies. In Nigeria conflicts often do arise over which group in the six geo-political zones gets the larger allocation of money accrued from the sale of oil or/and control of natural resources. In any form or nature from which conflict may have risen, it can be seen as a medium for societal change and development (positive or negative). Resolving conflicts in Nigeria could therefore be said to be a very delicate process where there is no “one-size-fit-all” strategy but a continuous process from which peace and harmony are the only desired goals.
