Integrated rural development in the Eastern Cape

Overcoming the legacies of Apartheid - Ashley Westaway (East London)

During Apartheid, Ciskei was one of the poorest and most neglected black "homelands" in South Africa. Today part of the Eastern Cape Province, the territory still suffers under the legacy of underdevelopment and repression: jobs in the formal sector are hardly available, arable land is scarce and infrastructure still in bad condition.

Supported by the South African government and by national and international donors however, one of the projects underway is located in the community of Cata to advance rural development, provide clean water supply, construct roads and create jobs in agriculture and tourism. These activities are carried out by Community Property Association of Cata and the Border Rural Committee which has succeeded to include this project into the government's land restitution scheme.

Via GEZA – Gemeinnützige Entwicklungszusammenarbeit GmbH, the rural development programme in Cata is also supported by Austrian development assistance.

Ashley Westaway is Director of the Border Rural Committee in East London. His lecture will be in English language.
